Moments before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, we all create a master list of how we are going to improve our lives for the upcoming year. “2016,” we all say in our minds, “This is the year where I will finally get my act together, water that dying plant in my dorm room, step foot in Marino, and conquer my demons.” Then comes January 1st and likely enough, no mindset change has occurred. We are still forgeting to water that same plant from 2015 (I say this because my plant has recently died). So what are we going to do about this? It happens every year and frankly, we’re all over it. You’re over it, I’m over it, and your mother is definitely over it. So here we go. This is how; together, we are going to blow 2016 out of the water.
The best way to make a change in your life is by sitting down and just thinking. That’s all you have to do, just think. Get in your Netflix binge position by wrapping yourself up in your blanket and get cozy because you are about to spend some quality ‘you’ time. So now that you are snuggled up with yourself and all distractions are set aside -that includes Tinder, your superlikes will still be there in a minute- let’s think about where you want to be. Realistically. You are not going to gain 50 pounds of muscle this month and you are certainly not going to healthily loose those 50 pounds within the first month of the year. Nevertheless, what is achievable is setting a marker for a certain achievement that you want to get done in the future, it does not matter when, just that you just want to get it done.
Your next step is to develop a plan to achieve it. Not just one plan, but a plan ‘A’, a plan ‘B’, and if you are feeling extremely wild, maybe even a plan ‘C’. These plans will get your goals oriented and outline a way of achieving them. You may ask, “But why do I need more than one plan?” The answer is simple: life is complicated and who the heck knows what is going to happen. So for the first time this year, get ahead in life and have several options for success.
The importance of making plans for yourself and writing them down cannot be understated! You need to quantify what it takes to get you where you need to be so that your goal doesn’t seem like an amorphous and ungraspable entity. 2016 you is amazing and powerful so grab that pencil, and write down where you want to be and how you are going to get there. Do it.
