Every girl can relate to the feeling of walking up and down aisle after aisle of makeup, whether in the drugstore or at Sephora, without seeing a single tube of lipstick that interests her. This feeling is especially overwhelming considering the matte, gray-nude lip trend that has originated from a certain reality television starlet and has set the beauty world abuzz. Brands from the drugstore to the department store, as well as Kylie Jenner herself have all released their own versions of this same product. However, if you’re looking for something different from the rest, Poppy King knows the feeling.
Just 18 at the time, the native Australian was feeling let down by the usual lip color options. Instead of going out with a bare pout, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Twenty years later, King’s brand Lipstick Queen is an Instagram and blogger favorite, albeit relatively unknown by the general beauty community. The company carries the standard colors, like pinks, reds and purples. However, this brand’s popularity largely stems from its innovative and unique lipstick shades, such as a white illuminating shade and another color that claims to be the perfect shade to wear with denim.
Along with the product itself, the packaging and naming deserve honorable mentions. While one would expect high-quality packaging from a brand whose products cost up to $50, it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into each product. Items from the Luxe Collection are housed in art-deco tubes in shades of silver and gold, and the Oxymoron Blush comes in shades such as Free Ride and Honest Politician. The website features cute blurbs written by Poppy herself that explain her mindset in creating the product. If you are stuck in a lipstick rut, Poppy’s your girl. In her own words, “There’s a lipstick for every mood, every occasion and every outfit and I am devoted to helping you find them.”
This emerald green shade looks scary in the tube, but when applied to the lips, it reacts with your skin to create a custom pink shade just for your skin tone.
2. Hello Sailor
Just like Frog Prince, this lipstick looks intimidating in the tube, but it applies as a beautiful blackberry shade that instantly makes your teeth look whiter!
3. Ice Queen
You’ve heard of illuminator for your cheeks, but have you ever seen an illuminator for your lips?
4. Endless Summer
There’s sunscreen for the face and sunscreen for the body, but it seems that the most delicate skin on the body is often forgotten: the lips. Endless Summer comes in 4 sheer shades that each have SPF 15 to keep lips soft and protected.
