Kylie Jenner did what her big sister Kim tried to do – she broke the Internet. Well, more specifically, she broke her own website. Within 30 seconds of the Kylie Lip Kit release, all three products were sold out and in 10 minutes the site was entirely down because of the amount of traffic. When the products restocked on Dec. 14, they sold out again within a quick minute.
Kylie released three lip colors: Candy K, Dolce K and True Brown K. Each lip kit contains a liquid lipstick and a lip liner, priced at $29 for the pack. The kit is not really a steal for her predominately teen fanbase, although compared to other high-end lip products it is reasonably priced. The colors are not particularly unique, a light pink nude, a brown nude and a deep brown shade. They are almost identical to three shades from ColourPop, which retail for only $5 each.
Kylie posted on Instagram announcing the launch of the website and assured her fans that she had invested a lot of time and work in the creation of these products.
“Been dreaming of this day for 2 years now. This was a long process but an amazing one! Visiting the factories and sitting with the amazing chemists creating the perfect colors and formulas for you guys! This is all me and I put my everything into these lip kits.”
Two years ago, no one was talking about Kylie Jenner’s lips. Sorry Kylie but I do not believe that back in 2013 you were dreaming about the day you could monetize on the hype you created around your lip injections.
These lipsticks seem to be hit-or-miss for most people – some find them to be the best liquid lipstick formula out there and have nothing but praises for the 18-year-old. Others find them drying and uncomfortable to wear and have experienced problems with the lipsticks flaking off throughout the day.
Why did these sell out so quickly? What is it about the Kardashian/Jenner family name that makes a product an instant-hit? Well, for one, resale value. On eBay the lip kits are going for a low of $70 for an individual kit and as much as $1,200 for all three.
If you have tried them, what did you think? If you have not, would you want to?
