Each year, the Met Gala celebrates fashion, honing in on a particular inspirational theme. This event is regarded as one of the most important fashion events of the year, besides fashion week. Attendees typically push the envelope with daring looks. One memorable look from this past year’s Met Gala was Rihanna in Guo Pei.
Past years’ themes have included “China: Through the Looking Glass” and “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” Grace Coddington stayed within theme in a Chinese inspired ensemble by Michael Kors in 2015.
The theme for 2016 is “Manus X Machina”, studying the evolution of haute couture and prèt-a-porter from the 19th century to present day. Haute couture, handmade clothing has traditionally been regarded as higher quality and superior to ready-to-wear lines. However, this exhibition explores the progression of both styles of clothing-making and how they diverged so dramatically. This theme comes from the technological revolution that has taken over our world and is incorporated into our daily lives. Technology has been infiltrating the fashion world as well. Just this year, MICA introduced a new bracelet style that includes an OLED screen to display notifications from your smartphone. Gone are the days of fumbling through your purse to find your phone and having to remove your gloves to use it.
Tech companies have also been branching out into the fashion world with accessories like Google Glass and the Apple watch.
The next gala’s co-chairs will consist of Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Jonathon Ive and Anna Wintour. Honorary chairs will include Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada, and Nicolas Ghesquière. The event is also supported by Apple, reinforcing the ties between fashion and technology.

This year’s Met Gala will hopefully officiate the incorporation of technology in the fashion world, making it even more accessible. Both the use of technology and fashion are a part of our daily lives, so the combination of the two will provide a sleek and convenient way to achieve style and technological advancement. Soon after the Met Gala, it’s safe to assume we’ll see more tech inspired pieces hitting the runway.
