Shortly after presenting a Fall/Winter 2015 line in Paris, Raf Simons announced his fifth collaboration with German sneaker powerhouse Adidas. Eighteen models were announced, including twelve colorways of the now ubiquitous Stan Smith, two versions of the Response Trail, and two new Ozweego II models. In addition, Simons presented two entirely new silhouettes: the Response Trail Robot and the Ozweego Robot. These original designs take cues from outer space, specifically the gear the early astronauts wore. The two Robot models feature specially machined eyelets and other extraneous details that add to the retro-futuristic effect.
The Stan Smiths from the collection, though simple, feature details that set them well apart from your garden variety tennis shoe. Made from supple leather and produced with a higher attention to detail, the quality is certainly there. Additionally, with 12 different colorways to choose from (everything from white to painfully bright fuschia to shiny silver), there is a Stan Smith for everyone. Some models feature tasteful distressing and all have a subtle ‘R’ logo punched in the side.
In its fifth season, the Raf Simons x Adidas collaboration has now well proven that its appeal goes far beyond the tug of seasonal trends. Largely responsible for the continuously rising popularity of “ugly” sneakers, Simons’ innovative sneaker collections have also resulted in a surge in popularity to the Belgian designer, as men and women interested in sneakers are exposed to his work. The sneakers (and designer) have also gained an immense following by the trendsetting A$AP Rocky and many of his fans.
Look to see the shoes begin hitting stores in July with prices being in the $300-500 range. Bodega, the hidden sneaker store located just off of Massachusetts Avenue, and Concepts, Cambridge’s resident footwear institution will both likely be stocking parts of the collection.
