The Best of New York Fashion Week: Spring 2015

By Rachel Satell

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs never fails to excite with his collections. From his theatrical pink funhouse runway to the famous faces sporting his army-chic collection, Jacobs definitely has the fashion world talking. While Karlie Kloss and Jourdan Dunn were familiar faces on Jacobs’ runway, everyone eagerly anticipated Kendall Jenner’s New York Fashion Week catwalk debut. However, the models were far from the focal point of the show. Marc Jacobs is consistently on trend season after season and this year was no exception. Army chic, navy as a neutral and wearable white garments were all over the catwalk and Jacobs followed suit.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren’s classic take on American sportswear has impressed the fashion world yet again. This upcoming spring season, Lauren is taking us on a safari. Pairing white, khaki and brightly colored organza skirts with olive button-downs, Lauren hit some of the season’s biggest trends. The brand’s offshoot, Ralph Lauren Polo, also made headlines with it’s 4-D holographic show. The looks shown at Polo, continued along the same safari theme as it’s higher-end sister-line.

Proenza Schouler

Gingham is here to stay! Plaid, flannel, tartan, gingham, call it what you will, but it’s been everywhere for the past few seasons and spring 2015 will be no different. From Oscar de la Renta to Altuzarra, gingham covered the runway, but it was Proenza Schouler’s take on the trend that had the fashion world taking a second look. On the same note, fringed detailing continued to make an appearance at the Schouler show. From bags to skirts and everything in between, expect more fringe.

Show Stoppers

Fashion week is about more than fashion; it’s all about the shock value. While there were great shows all across the board, there were a few that took the prize when it came to theatricality. Opening Ceremony took a different approach to ‘fashion shows.’ The brand put on a one-act play produced by Spike Jonze and Jonah Hill, where fashion darlings Elle Fanning and Karlie Kloss acted alongside Rashida Jones, Dree Hemingway and a host of other hollywood big wigs.

Rodarte gets a mention as well for their unusual choice of accessory. While the clothes at Rodarte always make a statement, this year it was the models’ eyebrow accessories that had everyone talking. Each model was adorned with eyebrow rings along the entirety of their brows. Rodarte certainly added a new meaning to the saying “fashion is pain.”
