Carla Fernández: The Barefoot Designer: A Passion for Radical Design and Community

By Elizabeth Johnson-Wilson

barefootOn April 17, the Gardner Museum is celebrating fashion designer Carla Fernandez in its first fashion exhibit.

The historic museum was founded in 1903 by Isabella Stewart Gardner, a strong patron of the arts at the time, and now displays several collections year-round in the arts and humanities for art lovers to enjoy.

Carla Fernández is a Mexican fashion designer who works to document, preserve, and display the textiles of Mexico’s indigenous communities. The installation, located in the museum’s Hostetter Gallery, will not only display garments and textiles, but also will contain films, live dance performances and public workshops, all revealing Fernández’s design process and new take on Mexico’s rich heritage.
