New York Fashion Week Experience, Fall 2013

By Jessica Sarah Arrowsmith

As a current co-op at Vogue in New York City, I was fortunate enough to attend New York Fashion Week. Below I’ve written a little bit about my experience at NYFW viewing a few of the 2013 fall/winter collections, and included some photographs I took at Bibhu Mohapatra’s Fall 2013 runway show.

I have been putting off writing this blog post for quite some time now, admittedly so because I find it truly perplexing to put pen to paper when dealing with words from the heart.  With my quotidian piping hot Starbucks caramel cappuccino in hand, I digress no further.

In an effort to capture the sheer magnitude of New York Fashion Week, it seems first fitting to reminisce. On reflection, the past eight weeks have been the most exhilarating and formative weeks in the initial stages of my fashion career. If there is to be a defining moment in ones early career years it should be an overwhelming feeling of purpose and absolute fulfillment, a concrete realization and a longing from deep within. For me, this defining and momentous moment was my experience at New York Fashion Week.

I was fortunate enough to attend both the Sachin + Babi and the Bibhu Mohapatra runway show, sitting front row, spellbound. There really are no words to express the overwhelming sense of jubilation felt while watching the magic of fashion unravel before your very eyes. Watching the flow of fabrics sway to perfection across the runway as models exhibit designers beautiful couture is an inexplicable and breathtaking sensation, one I am yet to fully fathom.
